Junior Post-doc position: Printed Organic Active Pixels for Digital X-ray Imaging

1 position for 2 years, starting in March 2012

Research activities
You will join the "IndiXi" project, a collaboration between the Electronics Department of "Politecnico di Milano" and the Center for Nano Science and Technology of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (CNST-IIT@PoliMi) in Milan on the development of inkjet printed active pixels suitable for their integration in a digital X-ray imager when coupled with a scintillator. Your task will be to work on the integration of a printed organic photodetector and a printed field-effect transistor to realize an integrated active pixel. The goal is to replicate the active pixel in a small array, to couple it with a scintillator and demonstrate a simple X-ray imager.

Prerequisites
The ideal candidate has recently obtained a Ph.D. in either engineering, physics, material science or any related field. The candidate should have hands-on expertise on organic devices fabrication, experience in printing techniques is beneficial. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, enthusiastic, fluent in English and possesses good interpersonal skills.

Salary
30.000 € (gross) per year plus benefits.

Application
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and detailed Curriculum Vitae to: Dr. Mario Caironi  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it before 13/02/2012.

Postdoc in Ultrafast high resolution microscopy

1 position for 2 years, starting in February 2012

The ability to investigate and manage very fast phenomena has a deep impact on today's life, with applications ranging from information and communication to energy production and delivery.

The relevant phenomena in organic (as well as inorganic) electronics cover a very wide range of timescales, strictly related with the size of the systems involved according to the thumb's rule: the smaller the system, the faster its time evolution. Today's electronics already reach THz frequencies, i.e. ps cycle periods, while investigation of the ultrafast phenomena has reached nowadays the femtosecond and even attosecond timescale. The physical length scales of these ultrafast phenomena range from tens down to few nanometers, requiring a corresponding resolution during the investigation and eventually the production of the devices.

Investigation capabilities down to the attosecond timescale and to the atomic size are available through pump-probe techniques, based on the infrared to the ultraviolet pulsed lasers, and electron as well as scanning probe microscopies, respectively. However, due to the diffraction limit of traditional optical microscopes, the time and space resolution are usually available only separately, allowing time resolved – ensemble averaged measurements or time averaged imaging.

Senior Researcher Roll-to-roll printing of organic solar cells - Project Solar-Print

1 position for an initial contract of 6 months, to be extended - immediately available

Research activities

You will lead the applied R&D project "Solar-Print" at the Center for Nano Science and Technology of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (CNST-IIT@PoliMi) in Milan on the development of a roll-to-roll process for the fabrication of cheap and lightweight plastic photovoltaic modules based on organic bulk-heterojunction solar cells. Development will involve both standard laboratory techniques for the realization of small area lab-scale cells for benchmarking and high-speed printing processes for large-area plastic modules. This work will benefit from the expertise in CNST and Politecnico of Milan in organic solar cells, and the leading technology of the industrial partner OMET s.r.l., a leading company in the design and technology of industrial printers for the graphical arts and packaging industry. The project is in collaboration with commercial partners providing high performance active materials yielding devices with record efficiencies.

You will work in close collaboration with CNST staff members, organize the daily experimental activity, in which you will be actively involved, of the junior members of the Solar-Print team and supervise their work. You will report to the project board and collaborate on organizing the work program.

This initiative will likely lead to a spin-off company, offering a great opportunity for career advancement.

Prerequisites

The ideal candidate has a Ph.D. in either engineering, physics, material science, chemistry or any related field and has more than 3 years post-doctoral research experience. The candidate should preferably have hands-on expertise on lab-scale solution-processed / printed electronic devices. Capability in managing projects and ability in programming R&D work will be an important part of the evaluation.

The ideal candidate is highly motivated, driven, enthusiastic, fluent in English and possesses excellent presentation and interpersonal skills.

Salary
50.000 Euro on annual basis.
